The Prokofiev Project

Prokofiev Festival

Reviewing Stanford Lively Arts’ 2008 “Stravinsky Project” Richard Scheinin wrote in the San Jose Mercury News: “It was a knockout. Here was one of those rare events we crave as listeners: a set of performances that take the familiar, confront it, and make it not just new, but more enjoyable than before.” Joseph Horowitz, Vakho Kodanashvili, and Nikita Abrosimov come to Stanford in collaboration with faculty artists George Barth, Kumaran Arul, Jindong Cai, the Stanford Symphony, and puppet artist Robin Walsh to interpret Prokofiev. Why did this acclaimed composer choose to return to Stalin’s police state in 1935? What were the trade-offs shaping his singular odyssey?

Presented in partnership with Stanford Continuing Studies.

Generously funded by Applied Materials Excellence in the Arts Grants, a program of Arts Council Silicon Valley.
