In an exceptional performance, world-renowned director and artist Robert
Wilson invites us into his astonishing aesthetic universe. Combining
striking images from throughout his prolific career, Wilson will provide an
intimate self-portrait of his creative process.
Presented in collaboration with the Stanford Institute for Creativity in the Arts, the Stanford Humanities Center, and the Department of Drama.
DANCE TALK WITH CHOREOGRAPHER ANN CARLSON

Ann Carlson, the celebrated New York-based choreographer, performer, director, and
conceptual artist makes performance works that are interdisciplinary, blending movement,
text, voice, music, and visual elements. Carlson will speak about some of her recent
projects and show examples from new works. R ecipient of numerous awards, Carlson
choreographs hauntingly beautiful ensemble dances and works collaboratively to build
large-scale, site-specific works that address social, environmental and aesthetic issues.
Presented in collaboration with the Dance Division, Department of Drama, with support from the Stanford Institute for Creativity in the Arts and the Cantor Arts Center.
MESSIAEN AND BEYOND:
STANFORD PIANISTS FROM THE STUDIO OF THOMAS SCHULTZ

Seven young pianists from the Stanford studio of Thomas Schultz perform in a concert
centered around works from the oeuvre of Olivier Messiaen, including selections from
the Catalogue d’Oiseaux and Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jésus. Also on the program
are related works by Debussy, Scriabin, Takemitsu, and Kurtag. Pianists: Andrew Zhou,
Jennifer Vogel, Mike Wei, Juliann Ma, Hotaik Sung, Jack Yang, Marc Evans.

MARK APPLEBAUM’S CONCERTO FOR
FLORIST AND ENSEMBLE
May 15, 2009 | Friday | 7:00 PM | Cantor Arts Center Audiorium
Stanford composer Mark Applebaum’s eccentric Concerto for Florist and Ensemble
features performance florist James DelPrince, whose materials include artichokes,
barbed wire, police crime scene tape, local prairie grasses, and skewered green apples
alongside pretty flowers. While DelPrince works deftly with pruning shears and glue
gun, an all-star ensemble of new music improvisers perform a mercurial and vibrant
musical score, complete with idiosyncratic Dadaist rituals.
