Each year, hundreds of local schoolchildren experience the excitement and wonder of the performing arts by attending Stanford Lively Arts’ student matinee program. Please join us in 2008–09 as we continue to offer comprehensive, interactive teacher education, engaging in-class student preparation, and specially designed performances that, taken together, put multidisciplinary resources and exercises for creative exploration at your fingertips.

CHANTICLEER

Chanticleer—the 12-member male a cappella ensemble—revered as an “orchestra of voices” performs music from their expansive repertoire at Stanford’s historical Memorial Church. From the sacred hymns of the medieval and Renaissance eras to contemporary secular arrangements, Chanticleer’s dynamic performance is a natural springboard for a study of music, history, and the expansive potential of the human voice.

ROBERT MOSES’ KIN

A phenomenon since its inception over a decade ago, San Francisco-based Robert Moses’ Kin dance company boasts a mix of sheer athleticism and visceral lyricism. Founded and directed by Stanford faculty member and choreographer Robert Moses Kin’s Lively Arts debut will inspire an exploration of dance’s ability to convey emotion and poignant narrative in a medium that can express elements of the human experience that are beyond words.

EVELYN GLENNIE PERCUSSION

Grammy-winning percussionist Evelyn Glennie can wrest an expansive orchestral sound out of a single snare drum. A captivating improviser and composer, she has challenged the music world to reimagine the vast possibilities of percussion through her highly communicative music making. An opportunity to share the complexity of rhythm, sound, and innovations in music, this is a fitting complement to creative studies at any grade level.
