2008-09 STUDENT MATINEES and PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
Each year, hundreds of local schoolchildren experience the excitement and wonder of the performing arts by attending Stanford Lively Arts’ student matinee program. Please join us in 2008–09 as we continue to offer comprehensive, interactive teacher education, engaging in-class student preparation, and specially designed performances that, taken together, put multidisciplinary resources and exercises for creative exploration at your fingertips.
All performances take place on the Stanford University campus. Please note the exact location and time as they vary throughout the season.

One of South Africa’s most celebrated ensembles, Soweto Gospel Choir
represents the best and brightest of Soweto township’s young vocalists.
Clapping, dancing, and swaying, the Grammy-award-winning choir is in
constant motion as it performs its uniquely South African hybrid of
contemporary gospel, regional folk songs, traditional hymns, and
international pop hits in half a dozen languages.

tunes ring in the holiday season. With trademark precision and a healthy

tubas) expands to orchestral scale to deliver a playful morning of holiday
classics.

turns great literature into great theatre, pairs up with Tobias Wolff, a
master of the short story. From the desperate hilarity of a teenage
girl’s attempt to create stability in her disintegrating family, to a
young boy’s search for refuge, More Stories brings
Wolff’s life-affirming storytelling to the stage—word for word.

Making its West Coast debut, the New York–based Making
Books Sing is a theater company that commissions and brings to life
musicals for children ages 4–14. Productions are based on outstanding
contemporary children’s books that honor children—their
struggles growing up, their cultural diversity, and their intellect. In
this program, audiences follow José Limón’s remarkable
path through childhood in Mexico, his immigration and adaptation to the
United States, and his struggle to become a painter, and then a dancer, in
New York City.

Celebrated for its
dramatic expression and technical mastery, the Limón Dance Company
illustrates the timelessness of the work and vision of Mexican-American
dancer and choreographer, José Limón. The Moor's Pavane, one
of Limón’s most notable works, is the centerpiece of this
matinee, and a perfect introduction to the life and work of this American
modern dance pioneer.
