Dave Douglas

DAVE DOUGLAS
Two-time Grammy-nominated trumpeter Dave Douglas is arguably the most original trumpeter/composer of his generation. From his New York base, where he has lived since the mid 1980s, he has earned lavish national and international critical acclaim, including trumpeter, composer, and jazz "Artist of the Year" by such organizations as the New York Jazz Awards, Down Beat, Jazz Times, Jazziz, and the Italian Jazz Critics' Society. His solo recording career began in 1993 with Parallel World on the Soul Note label and he has since released twenty-two CDs. In 2005, after seven critically-acclaimed albums for the Bluebird/RCA label, he launched his own label, Greenleaf Music. He was also honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship that same year.

For his composition, Douglas has received fellowships for his work from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer, the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, Arts International, the Vooruit Culture Center, Extension Ensemble and the Library of Congress. In addition to his work as a trumpeter, composer and bandleader leading a wave of innovative, ground breaking and socially and politically aware artists, Douglas is also a sought after educator. He has given master classes and workshops at universities and schools worldwide, including Harvard College, University of North Texas, Eastman College, and New York University. In addition, Douglas holds the position of Artistic Director at the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music.

Bill Morrison

BILL MORRISON
Award-winning filmmaker Bill Morrison has directed dozens of films and videos through his own production company, Hypnotic Pictures, and with the multimedia theater company Ridge Theater. Morrison’s films and videos, which often have theatrical and performative origins, and incorporate/manipulate archival footage, have been screened in festivals, theaters, museums and concert halls worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Museum of Modern Art, Royal Festival Hall, Sundance Film Festival, Tate Modern, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. Retrospectives of his work have been organized in Buenos Aires, Cork, Houston, Los Angeles, London, Montreal, New York, New Zealand, Paris, San Francisco, and Vienna.

He has created lyrical films to accompany the music of some of the most important composers of our time, including John Adams, Gavin Bryars, Bill Frisell, Michael Gordon, Henryk Gorecki, David Lang, Harry Partch, Todd Reynolds, Steve Reich and Julia Wolfe. Morrison is a Guggenheim fellow and has received grants from Creative Capital, the NEA, the Alpert Award, and a fellowship from the Foundation for Contemporary Art. His work with Ridge Theater has been recognized with two Bessie awards and an Obie Award. “Decasia”, his feature length collaboration with composer Michael Gordon, was described by J. Hoberman in the Village Voice as “the most widely acclaimed American avant-garde film of the fin-de-siècle.”
