What is Stanford Live?

Stanford Live is a university organization with a multi-faceted and inclusive approach to creating, presenting, nurturing, and celebrating the performing arts at Stanford. In part, Stanford Live is the new Stanford Lively Arts, building upon Lively Arts’ legacy of more than four decades of artistic presentation, artist residencies, faculty and student engagement, and commissions and premieres of new works. Stanford Live includes a wealth of collaborators and partners, including Stanford academic departments and individual faculty members, Stanford students, off-campus arts institutions, and community organizations. Crucially, Stanford Live supports the university’s focus on placing the arts at the heart of a Stanford education.

Why does your season start in January instead of in the fall?

In brief: New identity, new hall. We look forward to launching our new organizational model in the context of Stanford’s state-of-the-art Bing Concert Hall, opening in January of 2013. We do offer two pre-season events in Memorial Church, however: the annual “Harmony for Humanity: Daniel Pearl World Music Days Concert” (October 3) and a longtime Stanford favorite, “Christmas with Chanticleer” (December 11)

Why does the Bing Concert Hall have seating in the round?

“Intimacy” will be key to the Bing Concert Hall experience. The hall’s “vineyard” seating plan, with seats surrounding the stage, is designed to foster maximum intimacy between audience and performer. This effect is heightened by additional elements of the hall’s layout, including front row seats at the same level as the stage, choral seats (i.e., seats immediately behind the stage) at a very low elevation, and outstanding sight lines from all vantage points.

Where can I eat before the performance?

At Interlude in Bing Concert Hall lobby. The cafe opens one hour before performance time and serves gourmet sandwiches, cheese platters, snacks, and an assortment of wines, beers and nonalcoholic beverages. For expanded options such as tasty bento boxes, you can pre-order by 9am the day before the concert. Details »
