About Stanford Livley Arts
Stanford Lively Arts is engaging in the performing arts in bold and exciting ways. Join us and share the powerful experience of live performance as we explore new ideas, pose questions, and contemplate answers.
Inspired by themes of innovation and engagement, Stanford Lively Arts is increasing its role as an incubator of new work, commissioning visionary artists—including celebrated American composers Philip Glass and John Adams—to premiere new creations on our stages.
Juxtaposing familiar and new creative voices, Lively Arts presents artists ranging from singer Rosanne Cash to the Elisa Monte Dance Company to bassist Esperanza Spalding, performing works that inspire and challenge them this season.
From Beethoven and Haydn to Elliott Carter and Osvaldo Golijov, classical gems are interwoven with new works as every string quartet that visits Lively Arts this season—including the esteemed Emerson, Juilliard, and St. Lawrence quartets—will play at least one selection by a living composer.
Artists from diverse creative and cultural backgrounds, including jazz pianist Uri Caine, vocalist Rokia Traoré, and dance company Robert Moses’ Kin, expand boundaries in insightful performances that make unexpected connections and give voice to fresh perspectives.
Dynamic artistic collaborations are integral this season. Featured artists—including the Kronos Quartet, Jin Xing Dance Theatre, and Alexander Toradze—join forces with Stanford’s Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Chorale and faculty across campus for unforgettable performances and engagement events that offer a window into the creative process and a forum for exploration and discussion.
There has never been a more exciting time for the arts at Stanford! The recently launched Arts Initiative is reimagining the role of the arts at Stanford and fueling the construction of a new performing arts center, all ensuring that Lively Arts will play an ever more vital role in the experience of the arts on campus and in our community.
